Space exploration and travel has fascinated mankind for centuries. However, it has only been in the last sixty years that science and technology have developed to the point where such achievements are possible. In order to work in and explore space, many new technologies and materials had to be developed. These new technologies have found uses not only in space exploration, but also in everyday use. Enterprising individuals and companies often found new ways in which to use the technology and commercialize it. Instrumental in the development of these products has been the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NASA often promoted the commercialization of new technology they had a hand in developing, calling them "spinoffs"¹. As NASA has documented nearly 1,800 spinoffs¹, it would be difficult to mention all of them, along with all the other technology space exploration has led to. In order to examine their effect on society, I have selected three important and diverse innovations that have influenced the daily lives of many. Each technology's invention, development, and current uses are explored.
Question: How did space exploration result in/create technological advancements and how did these make their way into everyday culture/life?
Answer: The advancements in space technology have led to many new consumer products and new military capabilities through the adaptation of technology developed for space travel/research to different situations and needs. These adaptations have profoundly influenced the daily life of many people, in the United States and around the world.
